PREFACE
The first German edition of this book has been written as a habilitation at Vienna
University of Technology. The author is thankfull for suggestions to this book.
The individual introductions to the various subjects are intended also to open this
book to interested experts with different knowledge and background, and not just
only to scientifically qualified readers.
Hopefully the variaty of information by the dissemination of this book will be supplied
to an interested and attentive circle of readers, to lead to a better understanding of
the problems possibly occurring with ferritic-pearlitic steels, bainitic steels, or duplexsteels,
especially with regard to the properties of the used materials, their processsing
(especially welding technology), the following testing (e.g. destructive and nondestructive
testing, fracture mechanical, metallographical, and fractographical methods),
the quality management, the ecology, and the economy.

Sonja Felber

Sonja Felber born on March 21st, 1965, in St. Poelten, Austria, studied mechanical engineering - economy at Vienna University of Technology and finished with a PhD in mechanical engineering. During her studies at the University she additionally passed exams in the practical welding processes manual metal arc welding, gas metal arc welding, tungsten inert gas welding, and submerged arc welding. She is welding engineer, quality manager according to EN 45013, and auditor. Since 2002 she is university professor at Vienna University of Technology responsible for pipeline engineering, welding, and metallic materials.

Prof. Felber has a lot of publications at different conference, many of which are invited papers, and in different journals about pipelines, welding, mechanical technological testing, fracture mechanics, and quality management. She has written her second book on pipeline engineering, was editor of conference proceedings and chairwoman at differrent conferences, including international conferences, she organized together with her colleagues at Vienna University of Technology. She is holding lots of lectures, labors, and seminars for students of civil engineering, mechanical engineering, and chemical mechanical engineering additionally for postgraduate educations at different universities and has a lot of students doing their diploma or doctoral thesis or research projects under her supervision. She was member of OEGS (Austrian Welding Federation), Eisenhuette Oesterreich (The Austrian Society for Metallurgy and Materials), she was delegate for Austria to different Commissions of IIW (International Institute for Welding). From 1997 - 2007 she was additionally Coordination and Organisation Manager for IIW in Austria and since 2006 she is chairman of IIW SC XI-A (collection of strength and toughness data for pipelines). Furthermore, she is delegate of Vienna University of Technology to FNA 037 Austrian Standardization Organisation ”Welding“ and FNA 021 Austrian Standardization Organisation ”Steel and Iron“.

She is honoured in Who’s Who in Science and Engineering, Who´s Who in America Science and Engineering, Who’s Who in the World, Who’s Who in the 21st Century, 2000 Outstanding Intellectuals of the 20th Century, 2000 Outstanding People of the 20th Century, 2000 Outstanding Scientists of the 20th and 21st Century, Great Women of the 21st Century, Who´s Who in America, and others. Next to all her work she still finds time for her daughter and her hobbies painting, skiing, sailing, and diving.
